ALL HIP HOP
AllHipHop.com launched in 1998 and became the definitive editorial platform for hip hop culture at the precise moment the internet was reshaping how culture documented itself. Being a journalist for AllHipHop in 2006 was not a content assignment. It was being inside the primary infrastructure of one of the most significant cultural movements in modern history, before the platforms and algorithms that now distribute that culture existed.
As a journalist, I interviewed and profiled figures at the center of that moment, including Troy Mitchell, founder of SMACK DVD, the citizen journalism platform that preceded and shaped everything from WorldStar to YouTube rap culture.
Also profiled were Chingy and Lil Scrappy, who were both at their prime during the height of Southern hip hop’s influence.
Lady Sovereign, at the forefront of the UK grime and hip hop crossover.
And the Outlawz.
This is where CultureForward's cultural authority in hip hop, Black culture, and streetwear was built.
All editorial work produced in collaboration with AllHipHop senior editor Jake Paine, 2006.
Skills: Cultural Strategy, Cultural Forecasting, Cultural Narrative.
