FORMAT MAGAZINE

Format was the first Canadian publication operating at the intersection of street art, streetwear, sneakers, and music, covering the culture before those categories had a common language and before the brands that now dominate them had figured out what they were selling. This was from 2006 to 2007.

As a features writer, I pitched and secured direct access to the foundational figures of that cultural moment, including Justice, DJ Mehdi, Fafi, Cey Adams, and Fab Five Freddy, the original bridge between downtown New York art and hip hop culture. I also profiled the founders of several iconic streetwear brands.

This is where the cultural intelligence that underpins CultureForward's practice was built, inside the editorial infrastructure of a culture before the mainstream arrived.
